Yellowstone National Park has the largest bison population on public land in the United States. In fact, Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. They are the largest land-dwelling mammals in North America. Bison stay warm in sub-zero temperatures primarily due to their thick, woolly winter coat which acts as excellent insulation, protecting them from harsh winds and freezing temperatures. This coat is so effective that snow often won't even melt when it accumulates on their fur. Bison are agile and can run up to 35 miles per hour. The hump on a bison's back contains powerful muscles allowing them to move large amounts of snow when foraging.
